XC forecast for 5-6 september 2026

Another west wind dominant for this weekend

Saturday:

I would avoid the Valais, still risky due to the west wind, even though local flights of 50-70km will certainly be possible, especially in the Goms, which will be sheltered, but with turbulent air masses from a certain altitude upwards

The northern Jura will probably be too humid, with cloud cover in the morning. Flights are possible on northwest facing sites in the afternoon

The best option for XC flying seems to be to try a classic “Lake Geneva Balcony” route, with a launch from Salève and a flight heading west, across the French Chablais, towards Villeneuve.
Personally, I will opt for a day of speed flying in a sheltered location in the Prealps

Sunday

The forecast is still very uncertain, the models don’t agree on the strength and direction of the wind at different altitudes. The quality of the thermals is also still very uncertain.

Depending on how things develop, it should be possible to fly in the Valais in sheltered areas, but convection seems to start late in the day, not ideal for a long XC flight. Nevertheless, the announced ceiling heights are high, so if the wind isn’t too strong, a flight from Vercorin towards the Imperial Crown could be magnificent.

In the Jura, a thermal flight from Weissenstein, launching around 13:00, is worth considering depending on how the forecast evolves.

For the pre-alps, a local flight from Charmey is always beautiful, with a potential option to head towards Spiez via Gantrisch.

Stay safe and make your own decision with this windy conditions
