Whether you're aiming for your first 100 km, your first 200 km, or simply looking to experience the very best of Swiss flying, preparation is the key to success. With expert local knowledge, tailored XC strategies, and practical travel advice, you'll be ready to make the most of every flying opportunity Western Switzerland have to offer.

The 3 Must-See Spots for flying far in western switzerland

Fiesch /  Riederalp

A spectacular high-alpine environment in the heart of Wallis. This region offers some of Switzerland's most rewarding XC flights, but also some of its most complex aerological conditions. Powerful valley winds, terrain-induced effects, and large-scale pressure gradients all interact to shape the day's flying potential. Understanding these subtleties is often the key to a safe and successful flight.

The Niesen

An iconic pyramid-shaped mountain overlooking the Bernese Oberland. Its strategic position at the junction of several valleys creates complex wind interactions that reward careful analysis and perfect timing. Mastering these conditions is often the key to linking the main ridges and launching memorable XC flights to the east or west.

The Weissenstein

A distinctive Jura landscape of rolling ridges and open horizons. The Weissenstein is renowned for its long, efficient cross-country flights beneath beautiful cloud streets. While the terrain is often welcoming, careful route planning and precise navigation are essential to manage the numerous controlled airspaces that influence the region.

The sites presented here are just a selection of what Western Switzerland has to offer. Depending on the season, the weather forecast, and your ambitions, I can recommend dozens of alternative flying locations to maximize your chances of unforgettable flights throughout your stay.

The 4 Key Steps to Planning Your Trip

The Best Season

Switzerland offers some of the finest cross-country flying in the world, but its diverse terrain creates complex local wind effects that cannot always be understood from a simple forecast.

Spring brings very unstable conditions with narrow but powerful thermals, while summer brings very high cloud bases and broader thermals, as well as strong valley winds and thunderstorms

Knowing whether the best option lies in the high Alps, the Prealps, or the Jura Mountains can make the difference between an ordinary flight and an exceptional XC adventure.

From mid april to late august, you can expect to have some really good conditions, but the most chances to have few really big day in a row are in june and july

A strategically located place to stay, depending on the season

Choosing the right accommodation is an important part of a successful flying holiday. Depending on the season, weather patterns, and your personal goals, it may be best to stay centrally located for easy access to multiple flying areas, or closer to a specific site if you're aiming for a major XC achievement. We help you make the right decision based on your experience, ambitions, and the unique characteristics of Swiss flying conditions.

Choosing your Equipment

Fly with the wing and harness you already know and trust. One of the golden rules of aviation is: "Only change one thing at a time." During your trip, you'll already be adapting to new flying sites, unfamiliar terrain, and different weather patterns, so introducing new equipment can add unnecessary complexity.

Instead, focus on comfort and safety. We strongly recommend warm gloves, sturdy hiking boots, and several layers of warm and windproof clothing. Whatever the season, temperatures can be surprisingly cold at cloudbase, and the freezing level is often much closer to the top of the thermals than many visiting pilots expect. Being properly equipped will allow you to stay comfortable, stay focused, and make the most of every flight.

Transportation

Getting around Switzerland is easier than you might think.

I won't tell you how to get to Switzerland, but we can help you make the most of the country's excellent transport network once you're here.

Switzerland's public transportation system is one of the best in the world. After landing in almost any valley, you'll usually find a train or bus connection that can get you back to your accommodation within a reasonable time. There are also attractive travel passes that include access to famous flying destinations such as Fiesch, Riederalp, and many other premium XC areas.

For those travelling by car, Switzerland benefits from a dense and well-maintained road network, making most flying sites easily accessible. The main challenge is often parking, which is frequently regulated and subject to fees.

Depending on your accommodation, the size of your group, your flying plans, and your budget, we can help you choose the most efficient transportation solution. Whether you rely on public transport, rental cars, or a combination of both, we'll help you plan everything in advance so you can focus entirely on flying when you arrive.
